The Executive Board has issued this statement on the boards of SCANA and state-owned utility Santee Cooper halting construction of the nuclear reactor at Fairfield County's V.C. Summer Nuclear Facility:
"This is a fiscal meltdown of epic proportions. Not only have the people of South Carolina have had to pay ridiculous energy bills for power they will never get, but our grandchildren will be on the hook for this boondoggle. That's not to even mention the 5,600 workers who had been unceremoniously fired when this decision came down. Those workers, SCE&G and Santee Cooper customers in Columbia, Charleston, and the Lowcountry, and South Carolina taxpayers deserve better. In a just world, SCANA and Santee Cooper executives as well as the members of the Public Service Commission would be defenestrated, and their profits and compensation used to provide some severance pay to those workers, relief for electric bills, or both. Unfortunately, we do not live in a just world."
"We call on the General Assembly to come back to Columbia as soon as possible to address this as well as the Governor's unrelated budget vetoes."
